Energy Concessions for Seniors

Each state government offers a discount to Pensioner Concession Card or Seniors Card holders. Some energy companies, such as EnergyAustralia, AGL and OriginEnergy provide concessions to seniors all across Australia.

Energy rebates and discounts

SA Electricity Rebates

South Australia has four energy rebates for residential customers:

  • SA Energy Rebate
  • Concessions Energy Discount Offer (SACEDO)
  • Medical heating and cooling concession
  • Cost of living concession

SA Energy Rebate

Eligible South Australians on low or fixed incomes can apply for help with the cost of energy bills for their principal place of residence. The concession amount is indexed each financial year. For 2018-19, you may be eligible to receive up to $223.01 to cover both electricity and gas payments (including LPG bottled gas).

SA Concessions Energy Discount Offer (SACEDO)

The SA Concessions Energy Discount Offer (SACEDO) is available to energy concession recipients. This may save eligible households up to $531 per year on electricity bills, and is available in addition to the energy concession.

The SACEDO includes:

  • a guaranteed 18% off electricity usage and supply charges until at least 30 June 2019
  • flexible payment options
  • no late payment, processing, paper bill, credit card or exit fees.

Medical heating and cooling concession

The Medical Heating and Cooling Concession assists South Australians on a fixed or low income who have a clinically verified medical condition which requires the frequent use of heating or cooling in the home to prevent the severe worsening of their condition. The concession is currently $223.01 per year and available to eligible applicants in addition to the current energy concession.

If you live in a residential park you may be eligible for a combined concession for your water, sewerage and energy through the Residential Park Concession.

Cost of living concession

The Cost of Living Concession helps those on low or fixed incomes with their cost of living expenses, whether that be electricity, water, gas or medical bills.
For all available concessions, it is best to contact your retailer over the phone or via their website. Your retailer will check your card details with Centrelink and apply the concession to your bill.
