If you’re not happy with your gas and/or electric company, it’s time to think about switching to a different provider who can offer better value for money or a higher level of customer service than you’re getting with your current supplier. Finding a New Gas and Electricity Supplier
When it comes to switching your supplier, there are two options that make it much easier to find the right gas and/or electric provider for your needs.
Using a Switching Service: Going through a switching service means that your utility usage will be compared against quotes from gas and electric providers. If you choose to switch, they can cancel your existing contract and set up the agreement with your new provider. Be careful though; because the big switch is being handled for you, the full range of terms and conditions may not be made explicitly obvious.
Using a Financial Comparison Website: Using a financial comparison website allows you to look at a range of quotes from gas and electric suppliers to see if you can get a better deal elsewhere. If you choose to switch, you’ll have to handle the process yourself.
What to Look For In a New Utility Provider
For most people, the main concern will be the tariff associated with the contract. You’ll want to know exactly what you can expect to pay per kWh for electricity and per MJ for gas.
Beyond this, keep an eye out for “hidden” fees and charges that may mean that you’ll pay more than you first anticipate. Common examples include charges for setting up or closing down your account, late payments, disconnections and reconnections, and processing payments.
Don’t forget to check the length of the contract and the cooling off period in case you’re not happy and want to opt out.
As a lesser priority, you may also want to examine any discounts that are available for good customers who pay bills on time.
